Most people do not think about dentistry in categories. You might be due for a cleaning, have a tooth that suddenly hurts, notice an old filling starting to fail, or simply want a dentist you can count on when something comes up. General dentistry brings those needs together, from routine preventive care to treatment for damaged, painful, or missing teeth.
Birk Dental provides general dental care for patients of all ages in Creve Coeur. Dr. Adam Birk, DMD, FAGD, has practiced general dentistry since 2014 and has pursued extensive continuing education beyond dental school. His Fellowship in the Academy of General Dentistry reflects that ongoing commitment to advanced training.
That breadth of care matters when your dental needs change. Along with routine exams and preventive services, Dr. Birk provides treatments such as fillings, crowns, root canals, tooth extractions, periodontal care, and dental implant treatment. Many services can be completed right here in the office, allowing patients to continue receiving care from a team that already knows their dental history.

Your dental needs at 15 may look very different from your needs at 35 or 65. Regular checkups may be all you need for a while, then a cavity, cracked tooth, gum problem, or old restoration can change the picture. Having an established dentist makes those situations easier because you are not starting over every time something changes.
That is especially helpful for families. Birk Dental welcomes children, teens, adults, and older adults, making it possible for multiple generations of a family to receive care from the same practice.
And if it has been longer than you intended since your last dental visit, that is okay. The important thing is finding out where things stand now. We will evaluate your dental health, explain what we see, answer your questions, and talk through any treatment that may be recommended.
General dentistry includes both preventing problems and treating them when they occur. Some visits are straightforward cleanings and checkups. Others begin because a tooth feels different, something has broken, or a problem shows up during an exam.
Rather than looking at each treatment in isolation, Dr. Birk considers your teeth, gums, bite, existing dental work, current concerns, and what will make sense for your oral health over time.
Routine preventive care gives us a chance to monitor your oral health and identify changes before they become more involved. Dental exams and cleanings may include digital X-rays when needed, evaluation for cavities and gum disease, an oral cancer screening, and recommendations based on your individual dental needs.
Birk Dental also provides fluoride treatments and dental sealants for children and adults when appropriate. These preventive services can provide additional protection for patients who may be more susceptible to cavities.
If gum disease develops, scaling and root planing and ongoing periodontal maintenance can help manage the condition and protect the tissues supporting your teeth. Grinding and clenching can create another type of wear over time, and a custom lab-fabricated night guard may be recommended to help protect the teeth while you sleep.
When a tooth develops a problem, the right treatment depends on how much of the tooth is affected. A small area of decay can often be treated with a tooth-colored dental filling, while minor chips, gaps, or areas of damage may be candidates for dental bonding. Both approaches allow us to address relatively conservative problems without doing more treatment than the tooth needs.
More extensive damage may require a dental crown. Birk Dental uses CEREC technology to create many ceramic crowns in the office, allowing appropriate cases to be completed in a single visit rather than requiring a temporary crown and a second appointment.
If infection reaches the inside of a tooth, root canal treatment may allow the tooth to be saved. Dr. Birk performs root canals in-office, and treatment is typically completed in one visit. Once the infection has been addressed, the tooth may also need a crown or other restoration to protect it and restore normal function.
Our first goal is to keep a natural tooth when it can be predictably restored. Sometimes, however, a badly damaged, infected, or problematic tooth is better treated with an extraction. Dr. Birk performs simple tooth extractions and wisdom tooth removal in-office when appropriate. When a dental implant may be part of the long-term plan, bone grafting or socket preservation can also be performed when appropriate to help maintain the area for future treatment.
If a missing tooth should be replaced, we can discuss options such as a dental bridge or dental implant. Dr. Birk provides both implant placement and restoration, allowing patients to complete much of their implant care with the same dental team.
And when something cannot wait for a routine visit, Birk Dental also provides emergency dental care for concerns such as severe toothaches, broken teeth, infections, damaged restorations, and other urgent dental problems.
Finding something during an exam does not automatically mean you need extensive treatment. A small cavity may only need a filling. A cracked or weakened tooth might need a crown. If a tooth is infected, a root canal may allow it to be saved. When a tooth cannot be predictably restored, extraction and tooth replacement may make more sense.
The first step is understanding what is actually happening. Dr. Birk will examine the area and use dental imaging when needed to get a clearer picture. From there, we will explain the findings in plain language and walk through the options so you understand what is being recommended and why.
Treatment should solve the immediate problem without losing sight of how that decision affects the rest of your oral health.
You do not need to know exactly what treatment you need before making an appointment. If something hurts, feels different, or simply has you concerned, start by telling us what is going on.
For a routine new-patient visit, the team will review your health history, evaluate your oral health, take digital X-rays as appropriate, and complete a comprehensive exam. A cleaning may also be completed during that first appointment when time and your dental needs allow.
If it has been several years since your last visit, you will not get a lecture about it. We will focus on your dental health today, explain what deserves attention, and help you decide what makes sense from here.
