What Is a Dental Emergency?
Not sure if what you’re experiencing counts as a dental emergency? Here are some common issues we treat urgently:
-
- Severe or sudden toothaches
-
- Chipped, cracked, or broken teeth
-
- Knocked-out (avulsed) teeth
-
- Loose or dislodged permanent teeth
-
- Broken fillings, crowns, or bridges
-
- Dental abscess or swelling
-
- Injuries to the lips, gums, or mouth
If you’re in pain or something doesn’t feel right, it’s always better to call. Our team can assess the situation and help you decide what to do next.
What to Do in a Dental Emergency
While every situation is unique, here are some general tips for common dental emergencies:
Toothache
Rinse your mouth with warm water and gently floss to ensure nothing is stuck. Do not place aspirin directly on the gums. Contact our office to schedule an urgent evaluation.
Chipped or Broken Tooth
Save any pieces if possible. Rinse your mouth with warm water and use a cold compress to reduce swelling. We’ll examine the damage and recommend the best repair option, whether it’s bonding, a crown, or another solution.
Knocked-Out Tooth
Handle the tooth by the crown (top), not the root. Rinse it gently without scrubbing, and try to reinsert it into the socket. If that’s not possible, place it in a container of milk or saliva and bring it to the office immediately. Time is critical – the sooner we see you, the better the chances of saving the tooth.
Lost Filling or Crown
If a crown falls off, try to keep it and bring it with you. Avoid chewing on that side and call us as soon as possible for a repair or replacement.
