Why Replace a Missing Tooth?
Tooth loss affects more than just the appearance of your smile. Over time, missing teeth can cause:
-
- Shifting of surrounding teeth
-
- Changes in your bite or jaw alignment
-
- Difficulty chewing certain foods
-
- Strain on remaining teeth and dental work
Replacing a missing tooth with a bridge helps maintain the natural alignment of your bite and prevents future complications with your oral health.
Types of Dental Bridges
Dr. Adam Birk will evaluate your needs and recommend the best type of bridge for your situation. Common options include:
Traditional Bridge
The most common type, a traditional bridge uses crowns on the teeth on either side of the gap to support the pontic in between. This is ideal when you have healthy teeth adjacent to the missing tooth.
Cantilever Bridge
Used when there is only one tooth next to the gap, a cantilever bridge is anchored by a single crown. This option is less common and used only in specific cases.
Maryland Bridge
Also called a resin-bonded bridge, this type uses a metal or porcelain framework bonded to the back of the adjacent teeth instead of crowns. It is less invasive but also less strong, making it more suitable for front teeth.
Implant-Supported Bridge
For patients missing several teeth in a row, an implant-supported bridge can be anchored with dental implants instead of relying solely on neighboring teeth. This option is especially stable and preserves bone structure in the jaw.
The Dental Bridge Process
Getting a dental bridge typically involves two visits:
1. Preparation and Impressions
We start by preparing the teeth on either side of the gap to receive crowns. These teeth are reshaped slightly to allow room for the bridge to fit securely. Then we take digital or physical impressions of your mouth to ensure a perfect fit.
A temporary bridge is placed to protect the area while your permanent one is being crafted in the lab.
2. Fitting and Placement
Once your custom bridge is ready, we’ll check the fit, shape, and color before permanently bonding it in place. We’ll make sure your bite feels natural and that the bridge blends beautifully with your smile.
If your case involves a CEREC same-day crown as part of your bridgework, we’ll let you know whether that option is available based on your clinical needs.
Caring for Your Bridge
With proper care, dental bridges can last well over a decade. Follow these tips to keep your bridge and surrounding teeth healthy:
-
- Brush twice daily and floss carefully under and around the bridge
-
- Use a floss threader or water flosser to clean beneath the pontic
-
- Avoid chewing on hard objects that could damage the bridge
-
- Maintain regular dental checkups and cleanings at Birk Dental
-
- Address grinding or clenching habits with a custom night guard if needed
We’ll show you the best techniques to keep your bridge clean and your smile healthy.
